You can spend a morning walking through the leafy streets of Almaty, have lunch at a modern café, ride a cable car into the mountains in the afternoon and wake up the next day surrounded by landscapes that look nothing like the city you left behind.

For a first trip, Almaty and southeastern Kazakhstan are the easiest and most rewarding introduction. This region gives you access to the country’s most famous natural attractions, including Charyn Canyon, Kolsai Lakes, Kaindy Lake, Big Almaty Lake and the Shymbulak mountain resort.

If you have more time, you can extend the journey to Astana, Turkistan, Altyn-Emel National Park and other regions.

November is a transition month.

Shymbulak is the obvious choice for skiing and snow experiences.

April can be unpredictable.

Snow may remain in the mountains while lower areas begin warming.

It can be attractive for city sightseeing, but don’t choose April solely because you expect spring conditions everywhere.

For a first Kazakhstan trip, I would not try to cover every national park. The strongest combination is Almaty + Charyn Canyon + Kolsai Lakes + Kaindy Lake, with Altyn-Emel added if you have more time.

The following attractions are best understood as experiences rather than quick sightseeing stops. Some require several hours of driving, and a few are much better explored with a local driver or organised tour.

Kolsai Lakes are among the most beautiful natural attractions in southeastern Kazakhstan.

The landscape looks completely different from Almaty.

Lower Kolsai is the easiest lake to reach.

The road comes relatively close to the first lake, making it suitable for visitors who do not want a difficult hike.

The Middle Kolsai Lake requires more effort and is generally the most rewarding destination for hikers.

The Upper Kolsai is smaller and considerably more remote.

What Should You Experience?

If you have only one day, focus on Lower Kolsai.

Walk along the shoreline.
